One of the proprietary resources of McIllece Sports is the CFB Coaches Database, a full database of complete coaching staff information–including coaching roles, from head coach to coordinators down to position coaches–for every FBS team from 2005 to 2023.
Historically, most coaches in the college football world are judged anecdotally. Head coaches may be held up against their lifetime records or historical power ratings, but what about a 15-year linebackers coach? Or a career OC/QB coach who has jumped around to several different teams? How about a special teams coach who also mentors tight ends? In the modern era of college football analytics, it’s possible to objectively evaluate all coaches in the game, not just head coaches, but only if you actually know which coach was coaching which unit for which team in a given year.
That’s what this one-of-a-kind database provides. Meticulously compiled, it provides complete coaching staff information for every FBS team from 2005 – 2023. For example, it includes who coached defensive tackles for SMU in 2005 (Joe Sawyer), who presided as co-defensive coordinators for Cincinnati in 2010 (Tim Banks and John Jancek), and who coached the nickelbacks, outside linebackers, and assisted with special teams for South Carolina in 2019 (Kyle Krantz).
For easy sorting and tracking, all coaches are listed by name, year, team, numeric team code, numeric coach code, and up to five coaching responsibilities in a given season, from head coach to offensive tackles to special teams. The easy-to-read spreadsheet layout allows the coaching information to be easily merged with team-level data in all kinds of formats.
Designed for college football statisticians and analytics specialists, the CFB Coaches Database is a product that can’t be found anywhere else. No other database comes close to this level of historical coaching staff detail, which has the potential to transform how you conduct CFB analytics.
